FAQ

Postcard Printing FAQs

What sizes do postcards come in?

Our standard sizes are 4.25″ × 6″, 6″ × 8.5 and 6″ × 11″ which are based on the maximum impact for the best USPS postage costs. We can also create almost any custom size you’d like! For EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) the most popular sizes are 6.25″ × 8.5″ and 6″ × 12″, but again many options are available if you’d like another size. We can help consult you on the best size with postage costs taken into consideration, just give us a call.

How much does postcard printing cost?

Standard (4.25 × 6): as low as $0.07 per piece depending on volume.

Jumbo (6 × 8.5): as low as $0.10 per piece depending on volume.

Colossal (6 × 11): as low as $0.16 per piece depending on volume.

Give us a call and we’d be happy to quote you on your specific project. We print in house (over 4 million postcards every week) and will do our best to beat any comparable quote!

What’s the cheapest way to print postcards?

Ordering high volume reduces the per piece cost significantly and choosing the smallest standard size (4.25″ × 6″) helps minimize printing costs and postage.

When you mail your postcards through PostcardMania you also get access to bulk mail discounts saving you even more.

What’s the best paper thickness for postcards?

We use 14-point thick, glossy cardstock for most of our postcards. After mailing over 1 billion postcards we have tested hundreds of paper stocks and found the best one for high quality impact that holds up to the USPS bulk mail equipment.

How fast can postcards be printed?

Regular print time is about a week but we do have rush options available! Give us a call or use live chat and we’ll be happy to confirm that we can meet your deadline.

What file format do I need to upload?

If you are providing your own artwork, please refer to our guidelines here. Need help with your art? No problem, we have a full design team who can help with anything you need!

Some tips:

• Use 300 dpi resolution for images.

• Color mode: CMYK (not RGB) for both front and back.

• Bleed: add 1/8″ (0.125″) bleed on each side if your design extends to the edge.

• Keep critical text: at least 1/8″ from the trim edge, or better yet, 1/4″ if you’re doing bleed + trim.

• Mailing-area guidance (for when we do the addressing): we require a “safe” area; for example, there’s a 2.75″ no-zip-code zone from the bottom on certain templates.

• For file type: PDF, PSD, EPS, IDML (for InDesign) formats.

Can you design my postcard for me?

Yes! PostcardMania has a large in-house design team of direct mail experts. We offer 100s of proven templates across many industries, which we can customize to your business or we can create something fully custom for you.

What should I put on my postcard to get the best response?

After 28 years and over 1 billion postcards mailed, we have this down to a science! There are 13 points we recommend you include on your design (and when you use our design services we’ll incorporate these):

1. A clear & bold headline

2. Relevant images

3. Color that POPS

4. Special offer(s)

5. Subheadline on back

6. Benefits, not just features!

7. Company name and logo

8. Call-to-action in a bright non-matching color

9. Contact info & web address

10. Return address

11. 5-star review

12. Map of your location (for local business that customers go to)

Do postcards qualify for Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM)?

Yes, specific sizes qualify for EDDM campaigns. The most popular are 4.25″ × 12″ and 6″ × 11″. We can help you decide on the best size for your campaign, just give us a call!

What’s the best offer to put on my postcard?

This depends a lot on your business and industry, but from over 1 billion postcards mailed we have a few suggestions for you!

• View 100’s of examples by industry in the free report here.

• You will also get a better response when you make your offer time-sensitive (e.g., “Offer ends in 30 days”) to drive urgency.

• We recommend using a trackable offer: coupon code, QR code, or tracking phone number to help measure response.

• Combine value + simplicity: a clear discount or free consultation tends to perform better than something too complex.

How many postcards do I need to send to break even?

There is no universal “break-even number” (because it depends on your customer value, conversion rate, offer, and mailing cost). However we recommend:

• Get a quote including postage for the number of cards you are considering for your test mailing.

• Then estimate your response rate: for example, if you expect 1% of recipients to convert, you can model how many postcards you’d need to cover your cost.

• Review case studies in your industry for campaign ROI projections — since we run direct mail campaigns for many small businesses, you may find a similar business to use as a benchmark.

What’s the best postcard size or format for EDDM?

For EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) the most popular sizes are 6.25″ × 8.5″ and 6″ × 12″, but again many options are available if you’d like another size. We can help consult you on the best size with postage costs taken into consideration, just give us a call.

How many postcards do I need to get results?

Again, this depends heavily on your business, campaign, and goals. But our recommendation is to:

• Start with a test mailing: Many businesses begin with 5000 or more postcards to gauge response.

• Monitor response (calls, website visits, coupon redemptions, etc.) and adjust volume as needed. If your test campaign performs well, scale up.
